Boundaries That Keep the Connection

Real scripts, scenarios and worked examples for setting boundaries with family that protect you without cutting people off.

Understanding it

A boundary is not a punishment and it is not an ultimatum. It is a statement about what you will do, not a demand about what someone else must do. 'You cannot talk to me that way' is a demand you cannot enforce. 'If the yelling starts, I am going to end the call and try again tomorrow' is a boundary, because the whole thing is inside your control. That distinction is the single most useful thing in this module.

When to reach for more support

If setting a boundary has led to threats, stalking, financial control, or any form of abuse, this becomes a safety issue rather than a communication issue — talk with a counselor and see the safety planning resources. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, and 988 is available for mental health crisis support.
