Breaking Unhealthy Generational Patterns

Name the family patterns you inherited, understand why they repeat, and learn how to interrupt them without erasing your family or your history.

Understanding it

Families pass down more than features and recipes. They pass down rules about what may be said, how anger is expressed, who is allowed to have needs, what happens when someone disappoints, and whether feelings are treated as information or as a problem. Most of these rules were never spoken. You absorbed them the way you absorbed language — by immersion, before you had any way to evaluate them.

When to reach for more support

If this work brings up memories of abuse, panic that does not settle, or thoughts of harming yourself, slow down and get support. Trauma-focused therapy exists for exactly this. Call or text 988 in the US if you are in crisis, and if you are currently unsafe with a family member, prioritize safety planning before any conversation about patterns.
