Caregiving and Caregiver Fatigue

Naming and addressing the deep exhaustion of caring for an aging or ill loved one, without guilt for needing support.

Understanding it

Caregiver fatigue is a well-documented physiological and emotional state, not a sign of weakness or insufficient love. Caring for someone whose needs are ongoing, unpredictable, or increasing keeps the body's stress systems activated for months or years at a time, with little of the recovery period the body was designed to have between stressors. Over time, this chronic activation shows up as physical exhaustion, irritability, sleep disruption, and a sense of emotional numbness that can feel confusing or shameful to admit.
