Cutting Ties & Building a Healthier Life

How to decide when a relationship needs to end, how to end it with as little damage as possible, and how to build a life on values you actually chose.

Understanding it

Ending a relationship — with a parent, a sibling, a friend, or a group — is a serious decision, and it deserves to be made carefully rather than in a moment of anger or exhaustion. The clearest way to think about it is not 'are they a bad person' but 'what happens to me in this relationship, and has that changed despite clear, repeated attempts?' A pattern that has stayed the same after you have named it plainly, more than once, is telling you something.

When to reach for more support

If there is abuse, stalking, threats, or danger to you or your children, safety planning comes before any conversation — contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 in the US, and involve law enforcement or an attorney where needed. If the grief becomes hopelessness or you are thinking of harming yourself, call or text 988 or go to your nearest emergency room.
