Rewiring the Mindset You Were Raised With

What to do once you realize how you were raised was not healthy — how to grieve it, re-parent yourself, and build new beliefs that hold under stress.

Understanding it

There is a specific and disorienting moment when a person realizes that what they grew up thinking was normal was not, in fact, healthy. It usually arrives sideways — watching a friend's family, reading something in a session, seeing your own child's face after you said something familiar. It can bring relief, because things finally make sense. It almost always brings grief too, because you are now aware of something you did not get and cannot go back and receive.

When to reach for more support

If this work opens up memories of abuse or neglect, flashbacks, dissociation, or thoughts of self-harm, work with a trauma-informed therapist rather than doing it alone — EMDR, IFS and trauma-focused CBT are designed for this. Call or text 988 in the US if you are in crisis, or go to your nearest emergency room if you cannot keep yourself safe.
