Losing a Spouse or Child Unexpectedly

Support for the disorienting, often traumatic grief that follows a sudden death, without a script for how it should look.

Understanding it

Sudden loss is different from anticipated loss in ways that matter clinically. There is no time to prepare, no chance to say goodbye, and often no warning that a normal day was about to become the worst day of your life. The brain, which relies on patterns and predictability to feel safe, is left without any way to make sense of what happened, which is part of why sudden grief often includes a stunned, unreal quality that can last for weeks or months.

When to reach for more support

If you are having thoughts of ending your life, feel unable to keep yourself safe, or are relying on substances to get through each day, please contact 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) immediately or go to the nearest emergency room; this level of grief deserves more support than any self-help tool can provide alone.
